Cyanobacteria Committee (CBC) Meeting


Members in attendance: Linda Murray, Schelley Rondeau, Lenore Clark, Mary DeVries, Anne Blodgett, Paul O’Brien, Kathy Barnard, Pat Tarpey, Nancy Byrd, Dave Ford, and Marie Durgan, Recording Secretary.

Members absent:  Warren Muir, Mike Turner and Justin Chaffe

1:05 p.m. David Ford called the meeting to order

    •    A motion was made by Lenore to approve the minutes from 5/6/19, seconded by Linda, motion approved.

    •    Discussion about Mirror Lake and Steve Wingate.

    •    NHDES comments on communication came back.  Wolfeboro to be hub and assure communication to all stakeholders.  Paul talked about being as hands off, but as thorough as possible.  Goal is to have a caving a calling system in place, asap

    •    Each Lake Association should have a point person.  Dave is going to develop a Flow Chart.  

    •    Accessing Committee is presenting Draft Cyanobacteria Identification and Reporting Protocol to the BOS for their consideration.  

    •    Cyanobacteria toxic or nontoxic?  Getting this information and other useful facts out to the public.

    •    Dave talked about mitigation and prevention.  Forest Rd. & Partridge Dr. and the Wetlands Permits submitted to NHDES Wetlands Bureau.   The survey of Carry Beach will be done.  Dave to meet with the engineer on design alternatives.  Either update septic with an advanced septic or pump sewer to North Main Street.

    •    Communications is going in a lot of different places. 3 types of folks:   day, visitors, & residents.  The current website capabilities are being researched by Paul.  People may click and get directed to another website.   Creating a place with different content is the idea.  Who gets the message?  The committee is going to use education and not rebuild.  Paul mentioned people subscribing.  Paul mentioned the possibility of using E-911 system on a reverse basis. Mary mentioned that the Chamber’s job is to keep people here, a positive approach should be used.

    •    Shelley said the alert message should be concise, and simple. In her health capacity in public health using more than 5 words either starts people panicking or they disregard it.

    •     Nancy Byrd mentioned an incident at Mirror Lake back in 2007 when there was a CB outbreak and backlash from this event (and how it was handled) created problems for residents trying to sell there homes  for 2 years.  

    •    Pat was talking about a site specific plan for Winter Harbor.  Delineate the sub watersheds.  On 6/19 a shore land survey will be done by boats, and on 6/20 a land survey of the watershed by the Lake Winnipesaukee Association.   

    •    Dave talked about the upcoming Capital Improvements submittals for 2020 and Forest Road.

    •     Next meeting: July 1, 2019 at 1 PM in the Great Hall.

    •     Dave adjourned the meeting at 2:14 pm.
